Sophomore year will focus on the Middle Ages from 411A.D. to the early 1600's
Things you will need:
I have not found an excellent rhetoric program online.
Edward Corbett's Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student purchase online. Although this is not required by Ohio Standards this is highly recommended for rhetoric studies.
Art supplies needed - 11 x 14 paper (day 10), small containers of royal blue, red, gold, green, yellow, black and white paint. Other supplies are explained as the year goes on,

three ring binder of your choice for Physics
Pencils, paper both lined and blank

If you are presently using this school you may have noticed that it has not met the September 1st deadline.  I will keep ahead of most American schedules.  If you are nearing the unfinished portion, please let me know and I will gladly catch them up before you arrive at them.



Day 1
Geometry
Rhetoric-Self guided if you have the book, this is not a required subject.
Bible-You will begin a memorization project that will last quite a few weeks.  You are going to commit to memory chapter 5 of Romans.  You can do this.  Read through Romans 5 today
Literature- Augustine, Confessions ( c. 411)  Read this summary of Confessions it will help you as you read Book 1  You will not be reading all 13 books of Confessions, you are however,
Augustine is aware that great spiritual people are not born that way.  They are simply sinners that are rebuilt, transformed by God.  They do not begin life confident and sure of God's path, they discover it, as you will as you follow God.
Writing/Grammar-How did Augustine look at learning when he was young?  What does he say about learning by compulsion?  Write these and all of your answers as if you were writing to someone who did not know about this book.  It will go without saying this year that if there is a question to answer you will write it down and send it to your teacher.
Vocabulary/Spelling-Today you will sign up for Vocabulary.com.  You will be working through the alphabet in an effort to learn vocabulary words.
Foreign Language-We will be following the French lessons in All in One Homeschool French.  It will be up to you where to begin.  Look through the lessons with your teacher and find where you should begin. Here is the link to French.

Literature- Read Book II Confessions 
Foreign Language-Continue in your French lessons.  Complete one lesson per day.
Writing/Grammar- Augustine gets into trouble as a teenager.  What does he say is the reason for his promiscuous behavior?  Why does Augustine leave Thagaste for Carthage?  Why is Augustine so disturbed over the theft of the pears?  What does he say his motives were?
Science-This is the homepage for the MIT Physics 1 Classical Mechanics Course from this page click on the syllabus link and read about this course.  MIT stands for Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
PSAT/SAT prep-There is an SAT pdf. download on this page.  Download it to your computer and get ready for fun!  Really, if anyone can make getting ready for the SAT fun it's Khan Academy.  Print out the test and just have a look at it today.
Government- Read Forms of Government read each one and pick two forms of government which you wish to look into. Let your teacher know what they are. 

Day 3

Literature- Read Book V In book III and IV  by this time Augustine has left Carthage for home and reaches a low point in his understanding and relationship with God (although he is not yet a Christian).  He beings to realize that the spiritual world may be far more important than the material world.  Augustine begins teaching and feels very conflicted, he wants to pursue God and yet is entangled in his old ways.  During this period he stumbles upon the Manichee faith (a heretical form of Christianity).  Write a summary of what you have read in this book. 
Writing/Grammar- Write a summary of what you have read in books III and IV.
Foreign Language-Continue in your French lessons.  Complete one lesson per day.
Science-Watch Course Introduction print out the course notes PDF and read pages 1-7, then watch clip 1 the 7 minute video called The Art of Making Measurements.  Write down what you think about this video.  What questions does it raise?
PSAT/SAT prep-Read pages 1 - 6 of the test helps and directions.  There are some helpful test taking hints.  Think about them, they are there to help you. 
Art/Art History- This year you will study art during the Middle Ages or Dark Ages and one of the greatest periods of art, the Renaissance. Enjoy it.  Make sure your teacher takes you to the nearest art museum if at all possible.  Read the Introduction to Medieval Art go tell your teacher what was happening in the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire.  How dark were the Dark Ages?  Go chat with your teacher about this. 

Day 4

Literature- Read Book VIII This is the book wherein Augustine is converted, or in our words he receives Christ.  
Foreign Language-Continue in your French lessons.  Complete one lesson per day.
Writing/Grammar-What are the people, readings, and experiences that lead Augustine to surrender to God?  What does this tell you about the work that God does in people's lives?  Remember that this book was written before the Reformation and Martin Luther's 76 thesis.  The Catholic Church was The Church.
Science-Go to Units and Dimensional Analysis watch clip 2 Scaling Arguments. Read pages 8-14 of Module 1 (you should have this printed from a few days ago) and print out Units and Dimension Analysis this will help you with the challenge problems.  If you would like it to be more condensed, copy and paste it onto a word document and shrink the font so that you can have it on a few pages instead of in power point form.
PSAT/SAT prep - Read pages 7 - 10 of your printed SAT test.  Read through everything and answer the questions.  These will help you with the test.
Finance-Watch Time value of Money.
Music- Listen to Classical Medieval Music

Day 5

Writing/Grammar-For what reason does Augustine write such a long record of his life?  How does this differ from autobiographies today?
Science-Print out the concept questions PDF .  Answer the first two quations (you'll answer question 3 and 4 tomorrow).After you answer them you may look at the solutions.  Though it will be tempting to look at the solutions beforehand, do not do it.  It's alright to get things wrong or not understand them as long as you learn from them.  Keep these in your Physics folder.
PSAT/SAT prep-Read and make sure you know how to do the types math problems on pages 11 - 13.  If you don't know how to do certain types of problems find them on this math link and learn how to do them.  It's okay if there are things you don't remember, all of this is to refresh your memory and get you ready to take the SAT.

Art/Art History - Read about Iconoclasm  Medieval and  Byzantine Art.  Why do you think there was such a fuss over the icon?  What do you think people were doing with the icons that made them seem dangerous?  Go tell your answer to your teacher.


Day 6

Literature- Augustine asks the question: Where did I come from?  Do you think most people ask this question?  If so, how do you think they answer it and how does it affect their belief system.  Answer this question for yourself.  This will be a one to two page essay due on day 8.

Vocabulary/Spelling-Go to Vocabulary.com and find the list called 100 SAT Words Beginning with a review them and practice them.
Science-Answer questions 3 and 4 on the concept questions PDF you started yesterday.

Science-Today you will print out the challenge questions.  Complete question 1 and then look at the solutions.  Khan academy has some great videos on fluids if you need some extra explanations.
PSAT/SAT prep-Read the math section about data analysis, statistics and probability.  Pages 17-20.  Once more, make sure you understand how to do each type of problem.  If you don't go to the math link and find the type of problem you need to learn.  Practice until you understand how to do the type of problem.
Government- Last government class you picked two types of governments about which to learn.  Here is the Forms of Government link if you need to refresh your memory.  Start a word document and write the title and definition of the type of government you chose, one on each page.
Start your research.  List five to ten major components of each of the governments.

Day 8

Writing/Grammar-Refresh your memory on the subject of diagramming sentences.  Look at the first 10 examples.  No work to do, just refresh your skills. 
Science-Complete question 2 of the challenge questions.  If you need additional help, feel free to visit Khan Academy or other Physics websites.  Dropping in at your local community college would be alright too if you are so inclined.
PSAT/SAT prep-Work through pages 21-22.  Use the math link  if you cannot remember how to do these types of problems
Art/Art History- Read about The Image in Medieval Art I was once under the impression that the artists in Medieval times were simply not as good as the classical and Renaissance artists, but as you read you will see why this art looked the way it did.  What is your view on classical verses Medieval art forms?


Day 9

Literature-  The beginning of the Middle Ages begins with the Fall of the Roman Empire(reading 1) Fall of the Roman Empire (reading 2) These readings are a good synopsis of that time.  The end of the Middle Ages is marked as the fall of Constantinople read The Siege (of Constantinople) through The Impact on the Renaissance  Note the date of the fall of Rome and he date of the fall of Constantinople.  
Foreign Language-Continue in your French lessons.  Complete one lesson per day.
Writing/Grammar- Write a one to two page summary of the fall of Constantinople.  Send it to your teacher.  Include the year of the fall and note somewhere in the paper the date of the fall of the Roman Empire.  This will be due on day 11.
Science-Complete question 3 of the challenge questions.  Show your teacher and file them in your Physics notebook.
PSAT/SAT prep - Learn how to do the types of problems on pages 23 and 24.  Here is the math link for help in doing these problems.

Literature/history-You will be starting a new book today: The Ecclesiastical History of the English People by Bede.  It was finished 731 A.D., around 300 years after the fall of the Roman Empire and is an accurate historical account.  Today you will read the Preface and start Book I  read the first five chapters.  Most of the chapters are short. Outline each chapter ( you may use the title of the chapter as the outline heading for each chapter).  List at least three points per chapter. 
Foreign Language-Continue in your French lessons.  Complete one lesson per day.
Writing/Grammar-Finish your fall on the Roman Empire paper.
Science-Today you will begin a new module. Print out the Problem Solving and Estimation PDF. and watch clip 1 Was Galileo Galilie's Reasoning Correct?  Read pages 1-4 of Problem Solving and Estimation.
PSAT/SAT prep- Read pages 25- 28 of your printed test.
Computer-Spend 10 to 20 minutes coding on Code Academy
Art/Art History - Read about Medieval Manuscripts and watch this video about them.  You will need an 11 x 14 piece of art paper for this project.  Measure in three inches from the edge of the paper and draw a very light pencil line so that your paper has a three inch border all the way around it.  You will need a T-square and a ruler for this.  Make sure your lines are even and straight.  Inside the pencil rectangle lightly draw pencil lines on which you will write your verse from your Bible work today.   Today you will write your verse on these lines.  Go slowly and use our best writing, if you know calligraphy use that or if you enjoy writing in creative "fonts" do that.  Have fun.

Day 11

PSAT/SAT prep-Read pages 29-33.  Page 34-41 are the answer sheets.  You will use these for the practice test.   Get them arranged in numerical order.  We will take a couple of days to refresh on areas in which you might struggle.

Art/Art History- Watch Structure of a Medieval Manuscript.  Pencil in a border that you would like to have on your manuscript.  Use pictures of Medieval manuscripts and try to fashion your border illustrations after things that you see.  Don't use any color yet, just plan out what the border will look like and explain to your teacher how you were inspired to draw what you did.  Show your teacher the progress that you are making.

Day 14
Bible-If you don't know Romans 5:1-5 by heart, make sure you do by the end of today.  Recite this passage at dinner or bedtime tonight.
Literature/History- Read to the end of Book I  (just four short chapters).   Outline as normal.
Foreign Language-Continue in your French lessons.  Complete one lesson per day.
Writing/Grammar- Today write at least a 1/2 page opinion paper.  Why is it important to learn English history?  We are not all of English decedent in the United States of America.
Science-Answer question number 2 from the Challenge Question PDF that you worked on and printed yesterday.
PSAT/SAT prep- Go through your test information pages 1-33 and see if there are any areas on which you should work. You will take the test tomorrow.
Finance-What is inflation?  
Music- Read about eight important composers during the Renaissance.

Day 15
Literature/History- Read chapters I- V of Book II Outline as before.
PSAT/SAT prep- Take the PSAT practice test. The test will take 3 hours and 45 minutes plus break times in between each section.  If you feel you need more time to prepare, talk to your teacher.  I'm sure something can be arranged.  The PSAT and SAT are offered in October in Ohio.  Good luck on the test!

Day 16
Rhetoric-Self guided if you have the book, this is not a required subject.
Bible-Here is your next section: You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Read through this passage three times.  Try to say it to yourself three times without looking. If you have any ways that you like to memorize things try them on this section.  Read this article on How to Memorize and use any techniques you think will be helpful.
Literature/History- Read chapters VI-X of Book II Outline as before.
Foreign Language-Continue in your French lessons.  Complete one lesson per day.
Writing/Grammar-Grammar quiz.

Bible-Listen to Romans 5:6-8 a few times and then say it to yourself until you think you've got it.  Write the passage down in a fun way, show it to your teacher.

Art/Art History-Read about Standard scenes from the life of Christ in art .  Images were important to this time period because illiteracy was high.  Images explained in picture form the life of Jesus.  As literacy increased more people could read the bible for themselves...a very good thing.
Continue to work on your manuscript showing your progress to your teacher each day.

Day 21
Rhetoric-Self guided if you have the book, this is not a required subject.
Bible-Open an account on Learn Scripture.  Type in that you would like to learn Romans 5.  It will start a memorization program for you. 
Literature/History- Begin reading Book III read chapters I- X outline as usual.

Art/Art History- Read Introduction to Early Christian Art While most of this article is correct it is important to note that Christianity is at it's core a relationship with the living God and not a religion defined by rituals.  While baptism is commanded and encouraged, it is not a prerequisite to having a relationship with Jesus Christ (see the thief on the cross in Luke 23).  Dr. Farber states that Christianity demands initiation which is not the language I would use.  The only demand Jesus puts on us is that we come to God through repentance and trust in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.  We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8 and 9).

Art/Art History-You will take a break from art history today and you will begin a painting project. The pictures below are monochromatic portraits. You will need (by your next art class) a canvas that is at least 11 x 14, white, black and a color of your choice paint.  If possible borrow an art projector in order to enlarge this picture. Today you will begin this project by finding or taking a picture of yourself that you like.  It will need to be in black and white. It is best to have a high contrast photograph (something with some shadows). Have fun taking pictures and if you like think about making a few of these for gifts at Christmas.  Maybe a portrait of your mom and dad for your parents or anyone else you think may like one.  Smaller canvases could be used for these.
If you cannot find an art projector, have you photograph printed out at an office supply store in large format (11 x 14).  Have it printed in black and white.

Read his lesson about Hues, Tints, Tones and Shades You will need to make four to six of these depending on the amount of different colors using this technique.  Keep all the shades in front of you.  You will only need your pure base color to highlight things that you would like to have stand out.  Paint the background first with your base color and then begin your portrait.
Look at your photo and use the darkest color for the darkest areas of your face and the lighter colors for the lighter areas.  Look at the examples of the monochrome portraits is you need some visual help.  You don't need to finish today, just get started.  You will have three art days in which to finish this painting.

After looking over the untranslated Old English read chapters  I - III of Beowulf (I have had some trouble with this link, it may take you to a page that is headed by translators name J. Literature-Read Canto XII - XV of Inferno In canto 9 the sin of usary is discussed.  Usary is the charging of interest on money lent to someone or to a group of people. Gaining interest is a common way of making money in the present world's economy.  Virgil explains that it is a sin because the money is earned simply by having money and not by skill or industry.  What do you think about this?  Can you imagine a world without interest gained on money?  How would the world look different if nobody charged interest on money lent?  Write out your answer.  Don't worry if you can't figure this one out, it's almost unimaginable to think of our present way of life without usary or interest.

Literature-Read Canto XV - XX of Inferno In canto 16 a statue is mentioned.  Check out Daniel 2  this is what Dante is referencing.  Here is an excerpt from Matthew Henry's Commentary on the bible that explains this dream/statue: The breast and arms of silver signified the monarchy of the Medes and Persians, of which the king is told no more than this, There shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee (v. 39), not so rich, powerful, or victorious. This kingdom was founded by Darius the Mede and Cyrus the Persian, in alliance with each other, and therefore represented by two arms, meeting in the breast. Cyrus was himself a Persian by his father, a Mede by his mother. Some reckon that this second monarchy lasted 130 years, others 204 years. The former computation agrees best with the scripture chronology. (3.) The belly and thighs of brass signified the monarchy of the Grecians, founded by Alexander, who conquered Darius Codomannus, the last of the Persian emperors. This is the third kingdom, of brass, inferior in wealth and extent of dominion to the Persian monarchy, but in Alexander himself it shall by the power of the sword bear rule over all the earth; for Alexander boasted that he had conquered the world, and then sat down and wept because he had not another world to conquer. (4.) The legs and feet of iron signified the Roman monarchy. Some make this to signify the latter part of the Grecian monarchy, the two empires of Syria and Egypt, the former governed by the family of the Seleucidae, from Seleucus, the latter by that of the Lagidae, from Ptolemaeus Lagus; these they make the two legs and feet of this image: Grotius, and Junius, and Broughton, go this way. But it has been the more received opinion that it is the Roman monarchy that is here intended, because it was in the time of that monarchy, and when it was at its height, that the kingdom of Christ was set up in the world by the preaching of the everlasting gospel. The Roman kingdom was strong as iron (v. 40), witness the prevalency of that kingdom against all that contended with it for many ages. That kingdom broke in pieces the Grecian empire and afterwards quite destroyed the nation of the Jews. Towards the latter end of the Roman monarchy it grew very weak, and branched into ten kingdoms, which were as the toes of these feet. Some of these were weak as clay, others strong as iron,

Literature-Read XXVI - XXX of Inferno In Canto XXVI, Dante makes another strike at antiquity by placing its last remaining hero, Ulysses (known as Odysseus to the Greeks), in the Eighth Pouch of the Eighth Circle of Hell. Dante explains Ulysses’ presence in this section of Hell by referencing his role in the ruse of the Trojan Horse, which enabled the sacking of Troy by the Achaeans. But Dante probably had a number of different motivations for placing Ulysses so deep in Hell. First, we have seen that Dante reveres Rome; Ulysses, as an enemy of Aeneas, who later founded Rome, can be seen as an enemy of Rome as well. Dante may be reaping revenge on him. Additionally, he may intend the great Greek hero’s spiritual defeat here to remind readers of the Greeks’ eventual defeat by the Romans on Earth. But, as evidenced by his dismissal of Lucan and Ovid in the previous canto, Dante finds that even Roman antiquity contains flaws. Here, he implies that the advent of Christianity has constituted an invaluable improvement for civilization: notwithstanding his honored place within Greek and Roman tradition, Ulysses behaved recklessly and fraudulently by Christian standards, and, in Dante’s Hell, Christian morals always take precedence over ancient values. In Canto XXVIII Dante shows very sever treatment of the followers of Allah.  Islam at this time had become a well established religion.  Why is Dante so sever with Muslims?  This raises a cultural question about how we get to God.  Most people in the western world today believe that there are many paths which will lead you to God.  Clearly Dante did not believe this.  Write down what you think Dante was warning and what you think he believed.

Literature-Read this biography of Niccolo Machiavelli.  He is considered the "Father of Modern Political Theory."  You will begin The Prince by Machiavelli today.  Read chapters 1 - 5 . You read in chapter 1 that Machiavelli sees that there are two types of states or governments: a republic or a principality. Later he goes on to talk about human nature.  Do you thing that this statement true?
 It is much easier to maintain control over a new principality if the people share the same language and customs as the prince’s own country. If this is the case, the prince has to do only two things: destroy the family of the former prince, and maintain the principality’s laws and taxes. People will live quietly and peacefully so long as their old ways of life are undisturbed(SparkNotes Editor).  If you agree in part or in whole say so.  Write down your thoughts .Make sure to send this to your teacher.

Literature-Machiavelli ends The Prince with an impassioned plea to redeem Italy. Stylistically, he abandons his detached tone and utilizes exhortation and poetry to communicate nationalistic fervor. He implores Lorenzo, to whom the book is dedicated, to deliver Italy. Despite Machiavelli’s efforts, the country would not be truly unified for another three and a half centuries. Some have argued that The Prince is really the manifestation of Machievelli’s desire to see a strengthened Italy, not a detached work of political science. Historical references to Italy dominate the book, and Machiavelli clearly conceives the book as a means to expedite the successful unification of Italy. But The Prince’s clear application to Machiavelli’s home country does not distract from the book’s relevance to philosophical questions. Bible/History of Christianity-Read about The Crusades and their How was Crusading Justified? It is important in my opinion to know that the Crusades took place before the invention of the printing press and before the Reformation.  A large part of the Christian population was illiterate and learned their information from a priest, often this was inaccurate biblical information.  Read this article carefully and form some opinions about this time in history. Remember too, that views on violence and warfare were very different.  It cannot be overstated that view on what is "normal human behavior" can and does change rapidly from generation to generation.  There were countless motives for these wars and it is wrong to oversimplify why they were fought.   This article hints that slavery and atrocities of Christians and Jews may not have been going on (it uses the word purportedly when referring to these things).  It is quite certain according to most scholars that these things did indeed happen to Christians and Jews.

Literature-You will begin a study of Martin Luther's Ninety-five Theses today. This is the document written by Martin Luther in 1519 that protested the abuse of power in the Roman Catholic Church and began the Protestant Reformation.  I have found it interesting to note that the Crusades took place before 1519; so before this time common people had no access to the Bible written in their own language and had to depend on the Roman Catholic Priests to tell the what the Bible said.  This is of course dangerous because people often use religious authority abusively or to gain their own selfish ends.  Read this brief synopsis of the crusades which began in 1095 and ended before 1300.

Basically if you knew that you had sinned you would wait until a pardoner was in your region selling an indulgence and purchase one as the pope, being God’s representative on Earth, would forgive your sins and you would be pardoned. Read Canto 1 you may read a summary of the canto if it is helpful to you. Spencer can be difficult to read, but as you read you will get used to the rhythm and begin to understand some of what he is saying as you  go along.  The summaries are included so that you can fill in what you have not understood.

Who is the first character we see? What is he doing? How happy is his horse with him? What sort of knight is he, based on stanzas 2-3? Do we know the knight's name? (Throughout Book 1 Spenser calls him the Redcross Knight.) Which of the moral virtues does Redcross represent? (See the Book 1 title, page 628.)
 Does Morpheus as a character provide a good example of the characteristic he represents? (This is one form of allegory that we will meet often--a character with an abstract name like Morpheus (i.e., Sleep) who shows the characteristics of that abstraction.(English Lit. 201 Professor Boyer).

Literature-Read  a plot overview , and Act 1 of King Lear.  Lear’s basic flaw at the beginning of the play is that he values appearances above reality. He wants to be treated as a king and to enjoy the title, but he doesn’t want to fulfill a king’s obligations of governing for the good of his subjects. Similarly, his test of his daughters demonstrates that he values a flattering public display of love over real love. He doesn’t ask “which of you doth love us most,” but rather, “which of you shall we say doth love us most?” (1.1.49). Most readers conclude that Lear is simply blind to the truth, but Cordelia is already his favorite daughter at the beginning of the play, so presumably he knows that she loves him the most. Nevertheless, Lear values Goneril and Regan’s fawning over Cordelia’s sincere sense of filial duty.  
Grab a sibling or parent or friend(s) to read through the play if you would like.  Consider forming a group to read through it, in person is best, but you can Skype friends if you like.

Literature-You will be writing a one to two page paper based on the following thoughts:  Throughout William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, there are several characters that have been oppressed, or otherwise denied the ability to reach their full potential. For example, Orlando is kept inside Oliver’s house, without any sort of gentlemanly education or ability to meet noblemen. Oliver is jealous of Orlando, and as such, he keeps the boy locked away from the rest of the world, which leads Orlando to fall into a depression. When he decides to fight Charles, despite the fact that Charles is an accredited fighter, Oliver actually begs Charles to be hard on Orlando and break his neck if possible. Instead, Orlando succeeds in winning the fight, in no small part because of the kindness of Rosalind. This portion of Orlando’s story shows his ability to succeed even when those around him do not believe he can be successful. What other characters in this play are surprisingly successful? Beginning in ancient Greece and extending through Shakespeare’s time
and for centuries thereafter, plays tended to follow the prescribed formulas
of the genres of comedy and tragedy. A tragedy, customarily written in an
elevated style, presented a reversal of fortune whereby a noble and powerful
figure suffered a downfall leading to catastrophe. This course of events was
generally caused by some weakness or error on the part of the protagonist,
usually referred to as a tragic flaw. The play was intended to provoke in
the audience the response of pity (for the loss suffered by the protagonist)
and terror (about our own ability to make our way through such a perilous
existence). Comedy was the mirror image of tragedy: generally written in
a more colloquial style, it took the protagonist—through luck or cunning
or a combination of both—from bad fortune to good, leading to a happy
ending. Comedy suggested that we were equal to the challenges life sets for
us, while tragedy showed that we would be crushed by adversity in the end.
Nowadays, the principal connotations of both terms are somewhat different
from their classical origins. Comedy arouses an anticipation of laughter;
while humor was generally an element of traditional comedy, evoking
laughter was not an essential part of its definition. When we use the term
tragedy, we generally mean suffering that is inflicted upon the innocent
and undeserving, rather than a catastrophe unwittingly engineered by its
